A power source is a device that supplies power to electronic equipment. Power distribution unit (PUD) supplies stable, reliable electrical current to many different devices within a building or other structure. It doesn’t produce or store electricity but simply delivers AC electricity from a utility, a generator, or other electric sources to various computers, telecommunications equipment, wireless equipment, security systems, and other items. A PUD is often found in industrial buildings such as factories and office buildings where numerous electrical loads are maintained.

It is important for a power source to be portable. Most of the time, these units are used to provide power to single-phase devices such as single-port circuits. Single-phase PUDs typically contain one circuit that can be powered by a transformer or amp. A transformer increases power from one voltage to another by reversing the electrical current. However, single-phase PUDs may use one of a variety of different power supplies, including those that require only a three-volt input, or can tolerate higher levels of input voltage.

Multi-ports are commonly used as power sources in multiple-location structures. These devices may contain up to five circuits and therefore require a different set of voltage and amperage requirements depending on the number of devices they are providing power to. Some multi-port PUDs use auto-transfer technology, which allows devices in multiple locations to share the same power source.

The main problem with this type of PUD is its limited range of operation. Because multiple outlets require the same output level of voltage and amperage, the range of these devices will generally be limited to approximately four to eight outlets. To solve this issue, many manufacturers have developed multi-port devices that are capable of operating in a broader range of voltage and amperage conditions. Multi-port outlets also tend to be more expensive than single-port units. When choosing a power distribution system for multiple devices, it’s important to make sure these devices can be operated in conjunction to maximize overall performance and efficiency.

One way to solve the problem of an improperly chosen power source is to implement a step-by-step process that can test multiple options in parallel. The process begins by evaluating the location of each outlet and deciding if any device will require an additional power source or will not benefit from a selected mains distribution system. Next, an automatic power supply menu must be selected and connected to each device. Each device is then tested in an identical fashion to ensure each has the same amperage and voltage requirements before selecting an appropriate outlet. Once all devices are tested, an appropriate output voltage and amperage level can be selected.

Many homeowners and businesses utilize outside electrical sources for outdoor lighting, security lighting, and heating and cooling systems. In order to allow for power-source selection, outdoor mains and outlet boxes must be properly installed. For residences, standard electrical circuit breakers with both ground and box outlets are required. To accommodate outdoor outlet boxes, exterior power sources can be either mains or battery-operated.
