Computer and office service technicians usually install, tune, test, calibrate, manage, and service computers including their peripheral and electronic equipment like printers, keyboards, scanners, optical drives, memory modules, hard drives, and other special electronic equipment used in several industries, offices, and several other facilities. They are also responsible for providing advice to the customers or users about any malfunction of computer and office systems. This may include advising on the appropriate steps to be taken for addressing the problem. They also perform troubleshooting activities to resolve minor technical problems.

Computer and office machine service technicians mostly work in a team environment to increase productivity and improve quality of service. This means that they must work together to resolve problems that may arise. They can either work individually or in teams depending upon the demand of the job. They must have some basic training in information technology (IT) so that they can easily handle the complex tasks. Basic requirements for this career include knowledge about computers, diagnostic techniques, good customer service skills, the operation of automated teller machines (ATMs), and basic office equipment.

The technicians must be able to tell the difference between an aged , a fake one, a malfunctioning one, and a damaged one. They must be able to tell how to use computers, how to troubleshoot such machines, and how to reset them. They should be familiar with several brands of computers and offices’ software and hardware. They should also know how to install network applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Windows Server, Microsoft Outlook, Access, Java, Cisco Netware, QuickBooks, Word, Quick Synchronization, Red Hat, Sun’s SunOS, FTP, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and others.

Most technicians work in private computer labs. This means that they work alone in an area of the computer lab that is devoted solely to computers.

Computer and Office Technicians may be employed by a single manufacturer, multiple manufacturers, or a multiple manufacturer and distributor. They may work for a company as an employee, while working in the company’s office or manufacturing facility as an independent contractor. The computer and office equipment manufacturing sector has the most number of positions available in all areas of the economy.
